A laptop or Desktop?
Now to decide this you must know some important points:-
A laptop is portable and compact so you can take it anywhere and use it anywhere as it has power backup A desktop is usually a bit cheaper as compared to a laptop(given that both have same technical configurations) and a desktop has a huge scope of upgradation which means you can add any hardware utility with time and requirement of your use. A desktop can perform better than a laptop (within the same configurations) Now, considering buying a laptop then here are some of the things that might help you to get a perfect laptop,
Processor
A processor is basically the brain of the computer. There are two main brands that avail processors for laptop, Intel, and AMD. If you are buying a laptop under 20K then you may consider AMD because at the low end there are certain AMD processors that can outperform Intel but if you have a budget over 25K and want better battery life than Intel is the best option. However, Intel too has a variety of processors that are available in the market. The entry-level processors for laptops are Intel i3(2 core), i5(4 core) and i7(4-8 core). Intel i3 is a good processor if you want a laptop for basic use such as surfing, movie watching, and other activities but if you are student or person that use some professional software such as Photoshop, AutoCAD and all then you should go for i5, i7 is for high-end gaming, graphic designing, and animation related stuff. These processors also have their generations, Intel always tries to reduce the size and increase the performance of processors with successive generations. FYI, an 8th Gen i5 processor will always perform better than a 7th Gen i5 processor. So it’s always better to go for the latest generation as it will be more battery efficient and performance will also be good
RAM
Random access memory of a computer is also an important factor to keep in mind as the speed retrieval of data depends on the amount of RAM. The more RAM you have on the laptop the faster performance you get. However, you must know how much RAM will be sufficient for your laptop based on the usage and the processor you have. Intel i3 can work very well with 4GB RAM hence; there is no need to pay extra for 8GB RAM. For i5 and i7 minimum 8GB RAM is required for the collective good performance by the RAM and processor. Having it 8GB RAM with i3 processor is just like having too many doors for a small room. In RAMs there are many versions too, like DDR2, DDR3, DDR4 that too have a straight effect on processing as of now it is suggested to go with DDR3 as it fits in budget and performance is good too but would be better if you go for DDR4 as it will be future proof for some time.
Storage
Currently, all the laptops offer 1TB storage, which is quite sufficient but if you play heavy games, they require more storage or you operate heavy rendering then you can also go for 2TB storage. These storage devices are Hard Disks which store data magnetically in a cylinder type thing. You may also have seen SSD in some of the laptops, Apple offers SSD only in their MacBook lineup. SSDs store data into chips; Data retrieval is 5x faster compared than HDD but have low storage capacity and are very expensive. A 1TB SSD may cost you way more than a combined laptop that you will buy. You should go for SSD only if you want faster boot up time and use heavy software for rendering and want quick rendering. Typically, 128GB SSDs are combined with HDD in many laptops. These are some of the basic things that you need to keep in mind, However, there are several other things that you should consider: Does it come with preloaded Windows? Brands often charge you for the original MS windows. A DOS or Linux based laptop is 4K-5K cheaper than MS Windows-based laptop, Majority laptops have MS Windows installed in them. If you want you can go for DOS or Linux and later on you can install Windows on your System.
GPU? Dedicated or Integrated?
Some budget laptops have integrated Intel graphics which are integrated in the RAM and can be used for very basic level use but if you want to play some good games, edit video, graphics and animation then you must have a dedicated Graphics Memory on your laptop as integrated graphics may perform well but dedicated GPU will always perform better than the integrated. AMD and Nvidia are the two brands that supply GPUs for laptops.
Nvidia is slightly better than AMD in every aspect but if you have a low budget than AMD is a good option but if you can afford Nvidia then definitely go for it. These also have the capacity like 1GB, 2GB, 4GB, 6GB. 2 GB Graphic card is sufficient for video editing and light gaming, 4GB if good for moderate to heavy Gaming and 3d Modeling and animations, 6GB graphics is for hardcore gaming and heavy rendering. Other Features? Latest laptops have touchscreen support, fully rotatable, and other stylish looks, fingerprint sensor, Type-C ports and other features. You may compromise some of these to get better processor and RAM as these are not that much of use as compared to other hardware but if you have the budget than you can get these cool features too. One more important question that comes to mind is that which brand to go for? Before picking a specific brand must see that if they have a service center near your place and how is the service they provide.
